Rabbit-ear irises (Iris laevigata, or 'kakitsubata') hug the edge of Himenoga Pond in Shimane Prefecture. The end of May is the best time to see the pond’s 2,000-odd irises as they bloom purple-blue and white, with blooms remaining into early June.
The Himenoga Pond Rabbit-ear Iris Cluster has been recognized as a Prefectural Natural Monument. Every year, local volunteers come out to cut the surrounding grasses in order to make it easier for the irises to grow.
The pond is situated on the Kitanohara depression on the north side of Mount Sanbe. The area offers paid campgrounds, tent rental services and even kitchen-equipped cabins, and since the mountain is known as one of the darkest places in Japan, it’s also a brilliant spot for stargazing!
Equipped with a planetarium, the Sanbe Shizenkan (a.k.a. Shimane Nature Museum of Mount Sanbe) lies at the base of the mountain, and offers stargazing events every Saturday.
