I’ve never actually “properly” worn a kimono.  Yes I've donned some vintage “fake” Japanese-esque robes, a few yukatas and a furisode for Halloween – all worn in wholly unorthodox ways I might add. Then I finally got my opportunity to don a real kimono, complete with all the underpinnings and a correctly tied obi

My day with @waso in Tokyo took me to Shirataki Gofuku Ten (the old Japanese name for kimono shop), in the Akatsuka area of Tokyo.  Founded in 1853, it is still operated by the Shirataki family, dealing exclusively in silk kimono for every occasion be it coming of age, weddings or Shichi-Go-San (a rite of passage festival for young children)

Obviously my eyes were immediately drawn to the brightly coloured and highly ornate furisodes, meant to be worn by younger women. But Ayumi, who was my kimono dresser from Shirataki, guided me instead to the many drawers of more *ahem* subtle kimono, from which a deep orange kimono gradiating into pale blue clouds stood out

Ayumi then proceeded to wrap, tie and bind me into a juban (under robe), the kimono and a gold thread obi with all the trimmings (obiage sash, makura padding pillow, obijime cord). Fifteen minutes of dressing for one serene moment in the beautiful landscaped garden of Shirataki's establishment
