At 10 feet long and 200 pounds, the Komodo dragon is the world's biggest and most powerful living lizard. These amazing creatures have thrived in the harsh climate of Indonesia's Lesser Sunda Islands for millions of years, remaining relatively unchanged. Komodo dragons are known to attack deer, goats, pigs, dogs, and occasionally humans. They kill with both their sharp teeth and---interestingly for a lizard---poisonous venom, a phenomenon only recently understood by scientists. The dragons also use their tongues to gather chemical clues in the air to special sense organs in the roofs of their mouths. The specimens on display at the Museum were brought from a 1926 expedition to the island of Komodo in Indonesia. #komodo #amnh #lizard #amnh # reptile #komododragon #venom #poison #indonesia
