#regram from @nytarchives | In July 1986, the Statue of Liberty turned 100. To celebrate its centennial, New York City organized Liberty Weekend, a “4-day, $30 million extravaganza,” complete with “a bonanza of harbor activities, street festivals, fireworks, concerts, races and other events.” And for the grand finale? “A $6 million extravaganza,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ reported — one that included about 6,000 #Jazzercisers, tap dancers, fiddlers, Elvis imitators, square dancers, marching bands, banjo players and drill teams. David L. Wolper, the chairman and overall producer of Liberty Weekend, promised this last act would be “one of the most spectacular nights in a person's lifetime,” but as our article pointed out, that depended on the person. “To many it was ‘breathtaking’ and ‘a night to remember’; to others it was the Half-Time Show That Would Not End,” @ニューヨーク・タイムズ wrote. Our staff photographer Keith Meyers photographed these Jazzercisers squeezing in a last-minute rehearsal on Governors Island on July 4, 1986. Other performers described the group as “inhumanly perky and good natured.” But as Marcie Maginnis, one of 234 Jazzercisers in the show, explained to @ニューヨーク・タイムズ, “what we can't stand is waiting around.” She then broke into exercise.
