From the window of their small cottage in Iceland, Bianca Sierra and Stephany Mayor can see the #soccer stadium where they practice every day. Veterans of Mexico’s 2015 Women’s World Cup team, the 2 now play for the club team Thor-KA. Stephany says she’s living the dream, playing first division soccer in Iceland. But they had a different dream when they moved to Akureyri, an isolated fishing city: They just wanted to play on the same team while living openly as a couple. Stephany and Bianca, both 25, are believed to be the first openly gay professional athletes in Mexico’s history. They’re certainly the first players from one of Mexico’s national soccer teams to speak openly about their sexual orientation. They went public about their relationship last June, when Bianca posted a selfie of herself and Stephany with the caption “mi mundo,” or “my world.” What followed: a barrage of threatening insults. To find acceptance, the 2 moved 4,500 miles from home. “From the very beginning,” Bianca said, “we felt that they valued our work here — they valued us as soccer players, without prejudice.” @andrew_testa photographed Bianca, left, and Stephany near their home in Akureyri, Iceland.
