In Plato’s allegory of metals, the philosopher classifies men into groups of gold, silver, and lead. You are pure gold. There is gold in your brilliant mind, there is gold in your infinite bravery, there is gold in you perpetual self-sacrifice, there is gold in your tolerance, there is gold in your passionate commitment to your people, there is gold in your fight for freedom, there is gold in your endless humanity, there is gold in your ceaseless loyalty, there is gold in your extraordinary ability for forgiveness. There is gold in your unbreakable spirit. There is gold in your freedom. You are a man of gold!

You have meant more to me than most. You have guided me and made me feel strong. You have taught me and built my character. You have inspired me and shaped who I am. I do not have enough time or pages to list the amount of teachings you have so generously bestowed upon my spirit. I can only work hard, in your honor, to hopefully achieve to be the quality of being you have been.
This is not our final step dear Madiba, but the first step on a longer journey. You've given South Africa and the world the gift to be witness to your undying fight. You were the tiny seed that turned into a gigantic baobabs tree from which we the fruit sucked its wisdom, dropped into the dirt, grew roots and emerged from the soil with our own fight for freedom. And so the cycle you’ve started will continue to live…

You are now free to go back to running in the fields near your mothers hut, free to swim in the clear stream that ran through the village that raised you, free to roast mealies under the stars and ride the broad backs of slow-moving bulls…

I honor you…
I thank you…
I carry you in my heart forever…
