Cela représente un sujet moderne pour Eugène #Delacroix, qui décida d’accomplir son devoir envers la patrie et de traduire la révolution en peinture avec « Le 28 juillet. La liberté guidant le peuple ». Comme il dit lui-même, « si je n’ai pas vaincu pour la patrie, au moins peindrai-je pour elle ». Cette toile réaliste, innovante, et romantique, fut d’abord rejetée par la critique habituée aux représentations classiques. Pourtant, elle est devenue depuis un symbole de la Liberté et de la révolution picturale.
