Whoever told you dinosaurs went extinct? Instead, they gave rise to the first birds, some of which abandoned flight for the terrestrial lifestyle pursued by species like cassowaries, which are flightless birds that live in New Guinea and Australia (seen here). Recently, a new species of dinosaur was discovered whose resemblance to a modern cassowary is uncanny. Found in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province Southern China, the dinosaur fossil is an incredeibly well-preserved and nearly complete skeleton. Corythoraptor jacobsi is part of a group of bird-like dinosaurs called oviraptoridae that inhabited the Ganzou area in the Late Cretaceous period 100 to 66 million years ago. Some oviraptoridae had distinctive head crests known as casques, and Corythoraptor jacobsi has one with a particularly striking resemblance to crests on modern cassowaries.
