Very sad to hear of the passing of Sam Shepard. He was an amazingly talented playwright who gave a voice to so many talented actors. He himself was such a talented actor. Nominated for an "Academy Award" for his portrayal of Chuck Yeager in " the Right stuff". I can vividly remember the day I met him when we where working together on the film "The Only Thrill". I was sitting in a high school gymnasium outside of Austin, Texas, having lunch with our director Peter Masterson discussing my part. Pete made a comment that he still hadn't heard from Sam but he was starting tomorrow, last time he saw him was in NYC . Sam was in his pickup truck with his dog. He made mention that Sam did not like to fly so he was probably driving from his ranch. As if on cue the door to the gym opened back lit from the bright sun outside and I could see the silhouette of tall skinny cowboy looking dude striding right for us! I remember what he said to Pete right after he said hi. "Where going to shoot the end of the movie first?" I was and still am excited I had not only the chance to work with someone who had created so many great plays and opportunities for actors, with an American voice. But to play his son was truly an honour. We shared the same birthday and celebrated it on set while we were making that film. We had chocolate cake I remember. It was a big deal to me, I don't think it was all that much to him. That movie experience is one of my all time favourites. If you want to check it out, you'll like it. There are some fine performances by Diane Keaton, Diane Lane, Tate Donovan, and of course Sam. We worked on another film together "All the Pretty Horse's " it was good to see him again on that film. We have lost a uniquely talented man today. R.I.P. Sam Shepard thank you!
