Cancer cells contain dense networks of interacting genes, like these metastatic melanoma cells. While some genes cancer cells can do without, others drive the biology that causes them to grow uncontrollably. These drivers have functional importance in cancer and represent potential drug targets. More than 100 Novartis scientists spent a year screening 8,000 genes (about a 1/3 of the human genome) for new drug targets, and they are sharing the data with the world in @CellPress because it could help the scientific community.
