Many years ago I was pretty militant in my hatred towards Country & associated it with the dodgy square dancing craze of the mid nighties where Billy Ray Cyrus and the Mavericks appeared to be the flag-wavers for that type of music. It all sounded cheesy and pretty much unbearable to me and that was that. Then one day I was on a long, lonely flight to Australia I was passing the time listening to the airplanes radio station where they suddenly played 3 songs back to back penned by Jimmy Webb but given life to by a voice I had not heard before and immediately fell in love with and changed my perception of Country music forever. I visited the first record store I could find when I landed and purchased the Greatest Hits. I pretty much exhausted that CD and bought many more through the years. At around that time I was working in a record store in Birmingham & I would bore & annoy my colleagues by devoting the last hour of each day to playing this mans music. I was lucky enough to see him a couple of years ago when alzheimer's had started to take effect & words were difficult to remember but the voice was as good as ever. Thank you Glen Campbell for making me realise that you should never right off any type of music whatever the genre. Rest in peace.
