99 years ago today, Opha May Johnson became the first woman to officially enlist in the Marine Corps.

Since she first enlisted in 1918, female Marines have played a significant role in accomplishing the Corps' mission. When the Women's Armed Services Integration Act was passed in 1948, women were given a permanent seat within the Marine Corps.
