Today is the feast of Jonathan Myrick Daniels, seminarian and martyr, who entered eternal life on August 20, 1965. The 26 year old Daniels, who was registering voters in Alabama, had been jailed for joining a picket line. After being unexpectedly released, he and his companions walked to a small store. Ruby Sales, a sixteen year old African American girl, walked to the store's door, when a man appeared and started cursing her. Daniels pulled her to the side to protect her from the threatening man, when he was unexpectedly killed by a shot from a 12-gauge shotgun. Daniels wrote earlier of his call to ministry, "I began to know in my bones and sinews that I had been truly baptized into the Lord's death and resurrection… With them, the black men and white men, with all life, in him whose Name is above all the names that the races and nations shout… We are indelibly and unspeakably one."
