Photo by @andreabruce : Hello, I’m posting images from this month’s NatGeo story on sanitation. More specifically, open defecation. An uncomfortable topic, but an important one for people, especially children, all over the globe. I spent much of the year awkwardly asking people if I could follow them to the bathroom, whether that was in a house or in a field.
Bottomline: If we don’t have healthy systems for sanitation, we won’t have clean water.
About half of the Indian population defecates outside without using toilets. The result is that children pick up parasites and chronic infections that impair the ability of the intestines to absorb nutrients — causing 117,000 Indian children die each year from diarrhea, according to Unicef. The current Indian government is trying to change this.
