Photo 1: In September 2005, a lone calf, desperate for company, followed a group of rangers back to their camp. While most elephants would be completely overwhelmed by the rescue process, the tiny seven-week-old merely flopped down at the airport and enjoyed a very nonchalant roll around in the gravel! Befitting her happy-go-lucky personality, we named the calf Makena, which means “happy” in Kikuyu.

Photo 2: Makena spent three years at the DSWT Nursery, where she charmed everyone – human and elephant! – who crossed her path. She was the firm favorite of the Nursery’s mini-matriarchs, particularly Lualeni and Chyulu.

Photo 3: In 2008, Makena graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, which also happens to be where her beloved mini matriarchs also ended up. She is still happy-go-lucky as ever and loves to play nanny to the graduate orphans’ wild-born babies, especially Wiva and Gawa.
