While I love the reflective solitude of a long walk, sometimes I also like to read books while I walk (just watch out for telephone poles! ??). I know a really fit guy who's main form of exercise is walking his dog (ie his child) 5-6 miles a day. I know women whose walks are a time to catch up with girlfriends on the phone. Some people group walk and it's the only time they have in a week to be social with a group of friends. Others walk with the whole family...kids, grandparents, babies.... That's the great thing about walking! It's incredibly good for your body, keeps you fit and healthy, but it eliminates so much of the mental bullshit that can come with higher-impact exercise: the competition, the feelings of inferiority or superiority, the kind of bravado of it all. Walking is simple and natural, and that, to me, is it's magic. ?
