Bank Holiday August 2017

Right across the south coast of England and in other parts of the UK, the seaside resorts were a battlefront in 1964. From the May bank holidays through to the August #BankHoliday the sand and shingle beaches were the place that #Rockers, leather clad, riding British bikes, listening to rock and roll came up against #Mods with their Vespa scooters, sharp suits and soul and jazz music.
Both groups would travel into town and seek domination of the seafront. From the May of that year the situation worsened, there were calls from politicians for tough prison sentences , the press went overboard and predicted the end of civilisation and the Police resorted to flying in reinforcements from Lancashire and other counties. We take a look at a Rocker and Mod getting caught up in the seaside runaround
Your nicked son-The first photo here -from Margate- with a Rocker being apprehended by the police. It almost looks staged- the Rocker is perfectly dressed and showing no sign of resisting, the onlookers lined up perfectly and the woman centre left looks like she should be in Monte Carlo not Margate. It’s a great photo.
You are nicked too-Swipe for the other photo. This time is the Mod heading off to the local Police station. The Police here are in summer uniform with the white helmets that was worn by Sussex police in the summer months at that time ( and the cane !!). The onlookers are out in full force on this one too. The couple centre foreground seem happy to be on film. The main villain of the peace- he looks like he couldn’t be having a better time.

Anyhow, enjoy the holiday and don’t get in trouble.
