This Hamilton Beach stand mixer traveled the U.S. in the 1930s and 1940s with Louisan Mamer, an employee of the Rural Electrification Administration (REA). Part of President Roosevelt's New Deal, the REA program brought power and electricity to rural areas not served by private utilities.
Mamer's job was to help families in rural communities get the most out of their newly electrified kitchens and homes. From 1937 to 1941, she traveled with an "electric circus" that treated communities to cooking demonstrations featuring not wood or coal but electrical appliances like this one.
Mamer was born on today's date in 1910 in rural southern Illinois. Learn more about this #groundbreaker on our blog: http://s.si.edu/REAcircus (Link in profile.) Swipe for two more photos: 2) Mamer on stage preparing for an electric circus event. 3) Photo from around 1936 of Mamer ready to demonstrate the best types of lighting for different tasks.
