The best part of my vacation was that I had plenty of undisturbed time to read. No one asked, but here’s what I’ve been reading these last few weeks! SINCE WE FELL by Dennis Lehane is a pageturning thriller. I don’t happen to love thrillers, so when this got “thrilly” I kind of started to get bugged. Everybody else loves it though. OCTOBER 1964 by David Halberstam (a gift from @relationshep) is the meticulously researched story of the ’64 Cardinals & Yankees baseball season that reveals not just the way the game was played back then, but for me was an important and disturbing history of racism in the MLB. Speaking of great sports books, I devoured @imseanavery's October release, ICE CAPADES. It’s a balls-to-the-walls, first person account of one of the wildest careers in hockey. Sean's honestly is going to blow your mind and cause a lot of controversy in the NHL. Pre-order it now! It took two days to plow through Colson Whitehead’s UNDERGROUND RAILROAD but it hasn’t been out of my mind since. It’s a gripping story about slavery and the human spirit that I can’t shake. I’m also having a hard time shaking THE ESSEX SERPENT by Sarah Perry. The dude at the bookstore said he loved it and I am having a terrible time getting through it. I keep coming back, though. I’m on page 120. If anyone read it, please advise whether to finish it or give up. Lastly, I loved the first two editions of SACRED CREATURES by @Pablor2810 and Klaus Janson; it’s a supernatural comic thriller about forces of good and evil in New York City, something I can relate to! Of course you know all three of MY books are out in paperback, as are three of my all time faves: A LITTLE LIFE, THE GOLDFINCH and THE NIX. I hope I can make time to read this fall, because I love it.
