Our frontman, Bumps Blackwell, marched into rehearsal one day in 1948 & announced, "Billie Holiday is coming to town & we're gonna back her up!" We freaked out in disbelief because we didn't know why we (the junior band) would be chosen instead of the senior band...Bumps said it was because, "we could sight-read better than anybody else around there." We were so excited, we could barely stand it. When it was time to play, she sounded like the legend that we all knew her to be & it was just beautiful...us on the other hand...((:0)) we were soundin' like a truck trying to crank up on a cold October morning (except for Buddy Catlett on alto) because we were so distracted by her voice...Her musical director, Bobby Tucker, leaned over & hissed, "if you mofos are gonna stand there gawking at Billie instead of reading the music, get off the bandstand & buy a ticket!" That straightened us up real quick!! We buried our faced in the charts & got it together! And it turned out to be a success because Bobby & Lady Day gave me this letter a month after that gig. So many beautiful memories!!...Miss them more everyday.
