Ilhan Omar (@ilhanmn) arrived to the USA as a refugee aged 12, fleeing civil war in her home country of Somalia. More than 20 years later, she has gone on to become the first Somali-American Muslim legislator. “In this representative reflective democracy it’s really scary to have people creating policies who are completely ignorant of what it means to be a refugee,” Omar tells TIME.
