We were delighted to welcome Dunkirk veteran Arthur Taylor to our #HarrodsHome last week, who was working in #Harrods dispatch when he was recruited, aged only 19.
Arthur was among the nearly 340,000 Allied troops evacuated by a fleet of over 800 boats between 26th May and 4th June, 1940. The 96-year-old from Mortlake, South West London, had joined the RAF but was seconded to 13th Lysander Squadron at Arras, and dispatched to the Royal Signals. Arthur had been there four months when the order was made to gather the troops at Dunkirk for the evacuation.
During his visit to Harrods, Arthur was shown how the dispatch process works today and was amazed at how much this has changed. He and his family enjoyed an Afternoon Tea at the Georgian Restaurant on the Fourth Floor where he met with Michael Ward, before visiting the store’s war memorial.
Arthur recently attended the premiere of new film, Dunkirk, which was written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and tells the story of how the stranded Allied forces were rescued from the beaches of northern France in 1940. #HarrodsHistory
