?? « Les ombres de Francesca da Rimini et de Paolo Malatesta apparaissent à Dante et à Virgile », tableau d’Ary Scheffer datant de 1855, illustre le drame du chant V, cercle II de la première partie de la trilogie « La Divine Comédie » de Dante. Francesca était amoureuse de Paolo, frère de son mari qui lui avait été imposé. Celui-ci, les surprenant enlacés, les assassina de son épée. Ce couple et son histoire tragique ont inspiré plusieurs peintres dont Delacroix, Ingres et ici Scheffer qui réalisa une dizaine de version de ce sujet. ? « The Shades of Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta Appear to Dante and Virgil”, painted by Ary Scheffer and dating from 1855, depicts a famous tragedy of the fifth canto, second circle, of the first part of Dante’s “Divine Comedy”. Francesca was in love with Paolo, brother of her forced husband who caught them embracing and killed them with his sword. This couple and its tragic story inspired many painters, including Delacroix, Ingres or Scheffer who made about ten versions of it.
