Paper lanterns like these were carried by supporters of presidential candidates in parades. Lit up in the 1840s through around 1900, they were a dramatic sight to see before elections. But they weren't designed to last long. When we wanted to put some on display in our new "American Democracy" exhibition, we faced a challenge: they're very fragile!
Could our Objects Conservation Lab specialists carefully open up and stabilize these delicate lanterns so they could safely go on display? Indeed!
