Hurricane Maria, the most powerful storm to make a direct hit on Puerto Rico in almost a century, ravaged the island on Wednesday, knocking out all electricity, deluging towns with flashfloods and mudslides and compounding the already considerable pain of residents. Less than 2 weeks ago, #HurricaneIrma dealt the island a glancing blow, killing at least 3 people and leaving nearly 70% of households without power. But this storm, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane, took out the island’s entire power grid, and only added to the woes of a commonwealth that has been groaning under the weight of an extended debt and bankruptcy crisis. But Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rosselló, offered words of hope. “There is no hurricane stronger than the people of Puerto Rico,” he said. “And immediately after this is done, we will stand back up.” @erikaprodriguez took this photo today of a sculpture, by the Colombian artist Fernando Botero, that was knocked over by high winds.
