@jessiereyez is one of those performers who burrows down into herself and doesn’t come back up until she has something valuable to offer. When the singer rolled through her song “Figures” with just an acoustic guitar at our dscvr shoot, she used an air of gentility as a bed for some truly fierce vocals. Her voice swooped and darted, and her passionate song of abandonment – “I gave you ride or die and you gave me games” – cut to the heart because it blended a wisp of vengeance in with the heartbreak. It’s a mix you don’t often hear. We fell all the way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Other fans of incisive music love it, too: Jessie’s making a name for herself right now. The 26-year-old from Toronto knew she had songs in her since high school days, so she opted out of college, and followed her muse to Florida for some beach busking and life-living. When she got back up north, she had a vision of who she might be and the courage to keep going. A Celia Cruz and Quentin Tarantino fan who puts a raw sense of urgency in the middle of her art, she weds a determined feminist vibe with love of family, respect for culture and dedication to emotional truth. Her “Gatekeeper” vid looked into sexism in the music industry and blew the whistle. A hero. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Her ‘Kiddo’ EP is one of the year’s strongest debuts, full of invention and ambition. She’s said that coming from an immigrant family has been a great prod for creativity – she has something to prove and always wants to share her music with others. That’s happening more and more. From Governor’s Ball to the BET Awards to Jimmy Fallon’s show, 2017 has seen Jessie make some massive strides. When you hear her stripped-down takes of “Fuck It” and “Gatekeeper,” and check out our upcoming video profile, you’ll know you’re seeing the real deal reveal herself right in front of you. Stay tuned. #JessieReyez
