Since early Japan, Inari, the god of rice and sake, was seen as the patron of business, and merchants and manufacturers have traditionally worshipped Inari. Each of the torii is donated by a Japanese business in thanks for prayers answered and continued prosperity. The names of the donors are painted on each gate in black.
