Mist floats below the edge of the Kakuto caldera, formed by a massive volcanic eruption about 340,000 years ago. Since the caldera forms a natural basin, a sea of clouds can often be seen when it becomes cooler in the mornings and evenings.
When the conditions are right, at daybreak the mountains of the Kirishimayama mountain range—literally, the ‘Mist Island Mountains’—truly look like islands afloat in a billowing white sea.
