The first concert I ever went to was ‪#MichaelJackson‬. I was 11. Since then I’ve always adored and obsessed over him. I had the honor of remixing Dancing Machine after MJ passed. I remember getting the call from Sylvia Rohn from Motown Records and couldn’t believe I was speaking directly with her and respectfully listening to her ask me to do the remix. It was the greatest honor to work with the instrumental stems and ‪MJ’s‬ voice from the original sessions. I never thought I would get asked to remix another song by MJ. This time they let me choose and as any MJ fan would understand, the difficulty in picking one song from the entire catalogue was incredibly hard. But when you boil it down to the most epic of all of ‪MJ’s‬ songs, #Thriller is the song that you can visualize the music video immediately, with the ghouls and zombies and MJ as a werewolf, the signature samples, the wolf howl, wind, screams, the instrumentation, each shining through the recording - the bass, the synth, guitar, drums and the brass. It is an epic epic moment in time for music, let alone being one of the most important songs in the history of music period. I opened up the stems like an archeologist carefully brushing away debris from fossils. It was bone chilling to hear ‪MJ’s‬ voice, so alive and so present yet like a ghost in the room. The samples, the isolated instrumentation, all in its place but sounding so present. Working on this remix was absolutely one of the most memorable experiences in my life. The careful balance of maintaining the integrity of the stems and samples with the concept of remixing it and Aokifying it so I can bring it a new lease of life in my sets and in our culture was delicate but I got there. I am extremely proud of this new remix and I hope everyone can follow that same feeling I had making it. Excited to be a part of his Scream playlist.
