The Shinko-sai Festival at the Gokonomiya-jinja Shrine is an autumn attraction in Fushimi held in early October each year. The Gokonomiya-jinja Shrine is the guardian deity of the entire Fushimi district in Kyoto, which is why the festival is also called the Fushimi Festival. The photo shows the procession of unfurled hanagasa (flower umbrellas), which takes place on the first day of the festival (photographed on Sept.30). Each neighborhood creates its own hanagasa, and prayers are offered for the procession to finish safely.
