This summer, @wsslyy did something he highly recommends. He listened to 150 albums by women in a row. Then he listened to 72 more. (He’s still going.) “I did it because I had begun to notice a narrowness in my sonic universe,” writes, @wsslyy a critic for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ and staff writer for @nytmag. “Just about everywhere I went, it was raining men.” In 2003, @Rolling Stone published a list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The highest-ranked album by a woman was Joni Mitchell's “Blue.” It was No. 30. But this isn’t just a @Rolling Stone problem, @wsslyy explains. @rockhall has 824 inductees and just 65 of them are women. About 75% of the almost 300 Grammy nominees for album of the year have been for albums by men. If @wsslyy’s marathon had a mission, it was to insist that female gods exist and to find them. And so he cooked and ate to these albums. He listened to them at the gym. He took them to bed. “I experienced so many different kinds of sexiness and senses of humor and many more kinds of pain,” @wsslyy writes. He also checked to confirm that @ジャネット・ジャクソン might always be our most undervalued pop star. (“Yup.”) @ilonaaszwarc took this portrait of #JanetJackson while on assignment for @nytmag in Anaheim, California.
