In honor of #LGBTHistoryMonth, we've invited activist and writer @AdamEli to share a selection of artworks in the Museum’s collection that were made by artists who self-identify as queer or represent queer subjects. From Adam: “I want to start by asking what makes a work of art queer, or representative of queer history? Does an artist being gay, like Charles Demuth, make their work part of the queer canon? Or, does a piece of art have to depict, or hint at, a same sex relationship like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s "The Sofa”? Queer history is broad. The harder we look the more we will find. I am excited to show you what I’ve found in my research of The Met’s collection.” Charles Demuth (American, 1883–1935). I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold, 1928 and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (French, 1864–1901). The Sofa (detail), ca. 1894–96 #TheMet #CharlesDemuth #ToulouseLautrec
