Fuck Christopher Columbus. And fuck his legacy that still persists, where we value profits over people...including in #StandingRock as in this video. Not a single treaty has been honored by the US government to the Indigenous people that live here. In the name of “progress” Columbus and the Europeans raped, pillaged and killed millions of Indigenous people. In the name of “progress” today, the greed of capitalism continues to serve as the excuse to poison the water, tread on sacred burial grounds, and keep Indigenous people in abject poverty. The poverty rate for the Native people of Standing Rock is at 43% because the U.S government refuses to take responsibility for the largest genocide in history. Police kill Indigenous folks today at a higher rate than any other groups of people in the United States. Even as Standing Rock has fallen out of the news cycle, activists suffer from legal fees and lawsuits by corporations that would rather see Indigenous lives and this Earth destroyed before they see the excesses of cash pried from their cold, white supremacist, money-worshipping hands. But the power of the people is stronger than the destruction of white supremacy and greed. And with every abuse of power, more people wake up the horrors of this oppression. For white folks, there is much to be learned from the resilience, courage and hope of marginalized communities on the frontlines. And it is our duty, as white people, to end this legacy of white supremacist oppression and the white silence and inaction that allows it to persist. Happy #IndigenousPeoplesDay
