Somewhere in #Manchester, amongst the impending high-rises, the uninteresting red-brick new-builds and the monotonous professional city, lies a distinct and charismatically old-fashion tavern -the #BritonsProtectionpub. In Manchester music is in the very bloodstream of the city and #TheBritonsProtection is no exception. The pub has and still remains a vibrant hub of music. The inn has a secretly seductive past, with a variety of associations with #FactoryRecords: during the celebrations for the Hacienda’s 10th anniversary in the eighties, the pub had a secret passage that lead punters to the record label’s mystery funfair. The unsuspecting pub was also the stomping ground for the occasional band meetings with #NewOrder, #RobGretton and #TonyWilson, who gathered together in a dingy back room of the pub. Rob has since been immortalised with a monochromatic mosaic that has pride of place on the exposed brick walls. The venue has also hosted some of the most iconic artists of their eras: #UB40 played for a measly £2.50 in 1989, the ‘scorching Yankee garage-punk’ band the #Oblivians came kicking-and-screaming in 1996, and even the #Courteeners front-man #LiamFray has graced the quaint upstairs stage. The venue lies a stone’s throw from the #BridgewaterHall and uou'll often see concert-goers pouring in and soaking up the pub’s musical atmosphere during the lengthy intervals. #GuyGarvey, #IAmKloot and #BadlyDrawnBoy are said to frequent the little unassuming tavern; Guy in particular admires its historic quirks and sincere authenticity. What is so enchanting about The Briton’s Protection is that it humbly embraces its history. It makes no attempt to modernise itself. There isn’t even a jukebox, but for the charming reason that they want to encourage spontaneous, uninterrupted conversation between those who love the city. The musical heritage is truly alive and illuminated in this pub, meaning that it remains at the true spiritual heart of Manchester.
