A home pregnancy test hid inside this discrete brown box, mailed to women in the 1960s and 1970s. It was a big deal to test for pregnancy at home instead of at the doctor's office—and some people weren't happy about it. ??? Though the home tests were revolutionary, they weren't as easy to read as you might imagine. The chemical reaction was so delicate that the box came with a mirror so it could be read without disturbing the vial. Instead of looking for a blue plus sign, you had to wait two tense hours to spot a doughnut-like ring if a baby was on the way. ?

These two test kits, the Remington and the Predictor, both faced delays in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) process over concerns that women—especially single women!—should not be allowed to test themselves without a doctor. ?‍? Discover the story of home pregnancy test kits on our blog: s.si.edu/hometest (Link in profile.) And stay tuned for more #HistMed stories. For the next 9 days, we're sharing the history of something that has transformed healthcare: antibody-based tests, vaccines, and drugs. ?
