During a football game at Howard University (@howard1867) last Saturday, @amangumphoto photographed Alex Jones, left, and Sydney Stallworth, the school’s cheerleading captains, raising their fists as “Lift Every Voice and Sing” played. For decades, that turn-of-the-century hymn, often called the black national anthem, has been paired with “The Star-Spangled Banner” at #HowardU home games. When it was time for the national anthem on Saturday, though, the cheerleaders switched from raised fist to bent knee, one at a time down the line, like a row of falling dominoes. (Swipe left.) “I think about the national anthem and what it stands for,” said Sydney, a junior from Florida. “I think about liberty and justice for all, and how it’s not being executed in our country right now.” There’s been a lot of discussion about @NFL players kneeling during the anthem to protest what they see as systemic racism. The @howard1867 captains said it would have been fine had anyone declined, but none of the cheerleaders did. And for now, the squad is intent on sticking to this ritual. “Injustice is still continuing,” Sydney said. “So we’re going to continue to kneel until we see a change.”
