When Philipp Bauknecht met Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in the early 1920s, both men were inspired by the colourful, Expressionist style of painting that had flourished in Germany since 1910. .
Influenced by Kirchner, Bauknecht conveyed in this work the euphoria of Expressionism by interweaving the dancers and the background into a single, ornamental whole. .
