Practice that morning was only the second time Baltimore’s Cardinal Shehan School’s choir had met up this school year. They were going through a normal rehearsal, and singing Andra Day’s “Rise Up” for an upcoming gala. As they got ready to sing, Kenyatta Hardison, the choir director, took out her phone and began recording live on Facebook, figuring parents would tune in to watch their children. Little did she know, the video would go viral, eclipsing 3.5 million views as of Friday. The video spread rapidly and was picked up by ChoirBuzz, a choral-focused Facebook group, whose video of the choir has been viewed more than 5.3 million times. The powerful lyrics and the children’s incredible voices have resonated deeply with viewers, even bringing some to tears. Several commenters shared stories of personal struggles and how the video has inspired them. Viewers from around the world have also reached out to the school, Hardison said, and many have expressed how the kids’ talents and innocence have given them hope during a time where it feels like tragedies dominate the news. “With what’s going on in the world, it’s refreshing,” Hardison said when asked to explain the video’s power. “I even said to my kids, ‘Whoa, this is a different type of movement.’ … I just told them God is using you and your gift.” For the full story and video, click the link in our bio.
