‘I didn’t even know this existed. It's just amazing,’ says our specialist Thibault Stockmann of a 1922 volume of poems, illustrated by Belgian artist James Ensor. ‘It’s extremely rare to find 50 drawings in one book like this, especially since they include all of the themes central to Ensor’s work.’

In 1923, Ensor’s friend Hélène Avril (pseudonym Claude Bernières) won the Verhaeren prize for her anthology of poems, ‘Le Visage des heures’. In homage, Ensor covered the pages of this original edition with drawings in pencil and coloured crayon.

‘There’s satire, there are masks, still-lifes, city views. There’s a lot of humour, too,’ Stockmann points out. ‘You can link nearly every drawing to another Ensor work.’

James Ensor (1860–1949), ‘Le visage des heures’, c.1922. 50 pages illustrated and annotated by the artist, each sheet 8 ½ x 6 ⅜ in. Estimate: €280,000–350,000.
