While on #nytassignment in Syria, the photographer @ivorprickett was one of a handful of journalists who accompanied an American-backed militia as they entered Raqqa, the city that has been an ISIS stronghold for years. “Twice I went to the front lines in the city, which has been largely liberated after a 4-month battle,” @ivorprickett writes. “I talked to civilians who had endured Islamic State rule for more than 4 years and survived.” Only a few weeks ago, the battle for Raqqa appeared to be at a stalemate. But then, the resistance began to crumble. Although pockets of fighting remain, Raqqa was declared liberated yesterday. “We have hot soup, we have bread: Come out and surrender,” @ivorprickett heard one of the militia fighters say on a loudspeaker. “The ISIS members and their families who surrendered to us are safe.” The 4-month-long campaign left behind a ghost city, and the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that more than 3,000 were killed, including 1,130 civilians. @ivorprickett took this photo of militia fighters burying one of their comrades. Swipe left to see more images he captured as he traveled through #Raqqa with the fighters who drove of ISIS.
