Jazz great Dizzy Gillespie was born 100 years ago today on Oct. 21, 1917 in Cheraw, South Carolina. The king of bebop is pictured here in 1948 playing his trumpet. According to LIFE, he was the "biggest bebopper in the jazz world today" and was "hot, cool and gone" in bebop lingo.
