In honor of #LGBTHistoryMonth, we've invited activist and writer @AdamEli to share a selection of artworks in the Museum’s collection that were made by artists who self-identify as queer or represent queer subjects. From Adam: “A close look at the Museum’s permanent collection demonstrates that traditional gender lines have been blurred in almost every culture for thousands of years. For example, in 1857, the painter Rosa Bonheur obtained a permit from the Paris police to dress like a man. And, as you’ll see in the second slide, an actor, who is thought to be Yoshizawa Ayame, is dressed as woman.” Rosa Bonheur (French, 1822–1899). The Horse Fair (detail), 1852–55 and Katsukawa Shun'ei (Japanese, 1762–1819) and Unidentified Actor (possibly Yoshizawa Ayame) as a Woman with a Sword (detail), ca. 1793 #TheMet #RosaBonheur #YoshizawaAyame
