Saw Bang on the Can last night at BAM and have mixed feelings. Some of the pieces were really interesting, little Phillip Glass influences, meticulously written, really masterful execution by the group, acoustic ambient trance, conceptually well thought out. But the overly enthusiastic clarinet player’s schleppy dress and nerd-fantasizing-he’s-a-rock-star movements and guitarist with the gray man bun were irritating...I know I’m being harsh and shallow, but I couldn’t get past it, especially as their performance had so much to do with the visuals with the video art screen running above the stage. There were at least 3 pieces that would get into modern music meets rock on psychedelic drugs which, with the flashy laser lights, were honestly disturbing. Overall, it felt like a soulless disconnect to anything beautiful in this world. Even the piece that had spoken word about the things in a town that were his personal identities to that place was without any feeling. So cerebral, no heart.
