Oh! ALSO. ALSO. ALSO... And to the people incensed that we would dare to participate in another culture's festival? It's a massive festival in Hollywood- Mexican families come and set up beautiful alters and we get to learn about and participate in their holiday. They also? Sell Day of the Dead merch, headdresses and sell their services of inclusion at face painting stations. No one who is here is here to mock anyone. So you can do this, not educate and invite other people to learn about your culture and close it off or... you can invite people in and let them be part of your custom and respect it instead of fear it or make fun of it out of ignorance. If you think us doing sugar skull make up is bad, then you should take it up with your families who welcomed us. Also? If you're gonna get that specific with it? Then no one gets to drink on St. Patrick's Day who isn't Irish bc you are stereotyping the Irish who have DEFINITELY been oppressed. I also find it odd that no one has an issue w me "appropriating" Christmas, even though I'm Jewish. Why not include people and explain WHY you have your traditions vs thinking you are preserving anything by shutting people out. Also, as a Jew... I think we wish more people cared about Purim.
