“‘The Shipping Forecast’ project began with the purchase of a tea towel from a British lifeboat gift shop in 1990. It was illustrated with a map marking the location of each sea area featured in the BBC radio programme broadcast four-times-daily to warn those at sea, or about to put to sea, of inclement weather.
The Shipping Forecast had been part of my life as far back as I could remember, but my love of its mantra-like, esoteric language negated any thought that these magical-sounding places might exist in real geographical locations. Armed with this new knowledge, I set out to visit all 31 areas – in retrospect a ridiculously ambitious idea that would take me four years to complete – to see if the reality of what I found bore any resemblance to the imaginary landscapes that already existed inside my head. The caption is the 6 a.m. forecast for sea area ‘Wight,’ broadcast on the day the picture was made.
