The Umi-Ugan Festival, also known as the Kaijin-sai, is held in the middle of August in the old lunar calendar—meaning it occurred in mid-October this year. Held all across Zamami Island in Okinawa, this traditional event thanks the god of the sea for marine safety in the past year and prays for a bountiful catch in the year to come.

The festival centers around the Okinawan god Miruku (represented here by the figure in the large mask), who has his roots in the Bodhisattva Miroku, and is believed to come from the land of Nirai Kanai across the eastern waves to bring good harvests.
Miruku walks with ‘kaminchu’—those who can hear the voices of the gods—and is followed by members of the community, who visit the holy sites on the island in a procession called Michijunee. The people of the island also perform the Eisa, a traditional dance accompanied by bells and drums. The day ends with a celebration before Ibi-nu-Me Shrine, which is dedicated to the god of the sea.
