#DYK Gertrude Simmons Bonnin founded the National Council of American Indians in 1926. Born in 1876 on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, Bonnin attended a Quaker boarding school from a young age. She also attended Earlham College and studied at the Boston Conservatory of Music. While living in Boston, Bonnin began to write stories and essays under the name Zitkala-Sa, which means Red Bird. Her writings focused on criticizing assimilation policies. Bonnin then began work for the Office of Indian Affairs in Utah. In 1926, she founded the National Council of American Indians which identified land and resource issues facing Native Americans. Bonnin also persuaded The General Federation of Women's Clubs to form an Indian Welfare Committee, which studied living conditions on reservations and encouraged the government to do so as well.
