Instead of offering their body measurements when announced on stage, Peruvian beauty pageant contestants offered statistics of violence against women in their country. @camilacanicoba was the first contestant, followed by 23 others. More than 2,000 women have been killed in Peru in the last decade, almost all of them at the hands of men. Peru ranks seventh among 19 countries in the region for killings of women, according to figures published by the nongovernmental group #TribunaFemenista Honduras and El Salvador topped the list.

Taking control of what is traditionally a sexist parade of women with misogynistic, nasty old farts judging their worth, on a major national platform, takes a lot of conviction. These women are #wonderwomen . I'm a little uneasy about parades of bodies continuing the tradition of sexism, but it's a competition like any other, involving a wide range of talent and offering a platform to speak out for the silenced. If these pageants can change the conversation then I'm all for it.
