Its creator Maria Sibylla Merian was one of the first female scientific explorers. At the end of the 17th century, she travelled alone with her young daughter Dorothea to the #tropical South American climes of #Suriname for two years in order to study from #nature the #spiders, #butterflies and #amphibians of the region - possibly the first time ever that anyone had set out on a journey solely for the purposes of #science.
