Most though not all of the 567 recognized indigenous tribes have reservations, which are often not the original region of the tribe but a place given via government treaty. And though most indigenous now live in cities, away from the reservations, many still return to these lands to be with their tribe, family and friends, and maintain culture. This summer I visited over a dozen reservations, in several states of the American west, to photograph the beauty and complexities of these communities, representative of both tribal success and issues perennially facing the tribes.
